Expensive Lesson

I learned an expensive lesson yesterday; never pick a random dentist off Google. Last year while I was trying to get pregnant I swallowed my fear {seriously, hate the dentist} and decided to go and get it over with because I know if could be affecting my fertility.  So I picked a place, it was new, modern, clean, and they were all very nice. My first visit was pretty much a summation of multiple visits and work I would need to get done.

First up was a super deep cleaning, which cost me over a thousand dollars from my own wallet, that’s a lot considering we have great dental insurance. I had a follow up cleaning 3 months later for another cleaning and then I had to see a periodontist to have some implants and other things done.  This was all in the last year.

Well after starting my job I decided to find a new dentist closer to work and my coworker kept raving about how much she loved hers, so I went to see them yesterday. My gums have been tender, but I thought it was just from pregnancy. All those hormones can really mess with your teeth! Well, I found out that the other super expensive deep BS I had done was not done even close to being done correctly. So I’m going to have to pay for another one, which sucks, but that’s why you should always get referrals from friends.

I did buy this amazing toothbrush, I highly recommend upgrading!
Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush

One day over the summer my oil light flashed, but didn't stay on so I didn't think much of it. A week or so later I mentioned it to Oliver and after he checked my oil he chewed me out for most of the day. I guess the place I went to didn't put any/enough in and he said I should be watching them change it when I'm there? Who does that? Well, I do now! I kind of feel like that about my teeth, how do you know you’re getting your money’s worth?  I’m so done, for all the money I've spent at the dentist this year I could have had a tummy tuck or something fabulous fixed :)

My smiles already good, but your teeth are important, blah blah blah. What expensive mistakes have y'all made?

Be sure to stop by Charly and Company, they have some CA-UTE fall items out right now. I'm really loving this dress and the Y'all top!

would be amazing with some tights and boots!

If you are lost for a gift for Christmas {it's always nice to bring a hostess gift to any party!} be sure to check out Dove's Chocolates! My personal favorite would be the Cinnamon Dusted Chocolate Almonds. DELISH!

  1. I bought all new tires and never had them rotated.... I ended up having to shell out another few $100 to have two new tires for the front put on. Oops!

  2. As a dental hygienist, I am sorry for your poor experience at the first dental office. It is SO important to find an honest dentist and hygienist that you can trust! It sounds like you have found a great place with a great referral! Get a good deep cleaning, use that sonicare and waterpik and see your hygienist every three months and you will be good to go! You have a beautiful smile! :)

  3. I have also spent way to much money at the dentist, that did a terrible job. Like you, I am terrified of the dentist! By the way... You look soooo pretty in that picture! :)

  4. My most recent expense: going to the ER for...wait for it...a headache. I'm a migraine sufferer and this was worse than I had ever experienced. I was convinced something was wrong, but no. A headache. The medicine they gave me didn't even help either. :/ Now we have a lot of things being put on the back burner. :(

  5. I definitely have a similar experience when it comes to Dentists. I picked one (and had a referral) b/c he was closer to work etc. He said I had to have 10 fillings (yes, I'm ashamed but it had been years...). Got them done over the course of a couple weeks.

Fast forward to moving back home a couple of years later and going back to MY Dentist....those 10 fillings weren't even done correctly and they weren't all needed. UGH.

Expensive and painful mistake, I hope never to make again.

  6. I didn't want to cough up $200 to fill a cavity...2 years later I had to cough up over a grand for a root canal. And that's not counting the crown.
    Stupid stupid stupid Maren.

  8. OMG I hate the dentist. My hubby decided to finally go to the dentist after years, and had over $4,000 in dental work this year. After insurance. So next year he's on my dental insurance, but hopefully won't have nearly as much work done. Ugh.

  10. Girl, I went to a new dentist so I could go to one close to home... he told me I had 19 cavities and needed about $1600 worth of work done! I went back to my old dentist just for a second opinion. He told me I didn't have a single cavity that needed to be filled... I had NO CLUE that dentists could be such a rip off! You really do have to be careful!

  11. I didn't back up my pics on my laptop. And then my child took a cup of water and poured it very delicately all over the keys as if he was watering a plant. No amount of STOP as I ran to him actually stopped him. $900 to take my hard drive and pull 5 years of pics off it. All my videos were gone forever. whomp whomp whomp.

  12. Those oil change places are ridiculous! I always leave with a list of things that "need" to be done asap.

  13. Eek!! That is my dentisty nightmare! I have terrible teeth. My parents never took us to a dentist growing up so I went for a consultation and my teeth are terrible! I need braces and everything. SO I am in the avoidance phase.... Glad you found a good dentist tho! That tooth brush is fancy!

  14. I hate dentist and mechanics! I don't know much about either one so when they give me these outrageous bills I feel like I have to pay them because I have no idea what they are fixing. I think most people feel this way and it's s easy for them to take advantage of people.

  15. ahhh!! That makes me want to cry. I work at a dentist and I feel like I hear these stories all the time and it's so horrible. I also have the Sonicare and I love it, but little tip... turn it off before taking it out of your mouth...especially if you are dressed haha.

  16. I'm a hygienist and this makes me sick. I'm sorry you had to go through this.

  17. if you ever have a doctor charging you that much for work, you should ALWAYS get a second opinion. I had a dental emergency a few years ago, and the dentist quoted me hundreds for work i needed to do. I used the dentist just for my emergency work, and then went to get a second opinion on the other stuff. I had two more dentists look at it, and they both said I didn't need it. IT was nuts. Some dentists are shady...

and the oil thing. One time, an oil place completely didn't put oil in our car. I was SO pissed! We could have been stranded. Yeah, now you always have to watch them...

  18. Ugh that's the worst. My sister tried a new dentist, and the woman said she needed that same deep-cleaning, and she later found out that the dentist tells all her patients they need these completely unnecessary (and expensive) procedures. So, I totally agree about getting friends' referrals!

  19. Ugh, I hate the dentist too and I went a few years ago to start some orthodontic work. I went through the $1k deep cleaning or whatever, then they wanted to do something else and something else, etc etc. I was also told they didn't do a good job when I tried to go for my ortho work. Now I have to go thru the process again if I want to do invisaligns. I have been too disgusted to go through the process again :(

  20. My 4 year old just had to have an infected tooth pulled and two fillings- $1300 later his teeth no longer hurt, but my wallet definitely does! He still has two cavities to fill. My expensive lesson was the importance of listening to dentist and brushing two times a day, flossing, and limiting milk/juice.

  21. Expensive lesson? Going to college and not finishing, plus not completing the financial aid part. I should have paid a couple of grand, now, 10+ years later, I'm paying off $50,000. :'(
    You have a beautiful smile!

  22. I'm a hygienist and before and after all of our "deep cleanings" we take an xray so the patient can see the difference and see that the tartar has been removed. Good luck with your new dentist! I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your old one :(

  27. I think we still have a ways to go in maximizing our medical-dental knowledge. Right now I think more dental professionals should go with dental marketing services, so their practices can be found online
