Getting Back on Track after Vacation.

While vacation is always a welcome break from our daily lives, those of us who struggle to control out weight can be faced with a hard decision.

Should I try to eat healthy or should I just relax and enjoy myself? For me those two can't really be obtained at the same time, I feel if I'm always focused on my food I'm ruining some of the fun I'm having. If I'm stressing about where and what to eat it's hard, but I also don't want to my body to feel like complete crap the entire time.

I decided to eat what I wanted, when I wanted, and workout when I felt like it. So for me, that included a lot of chicken, fries, fruit, and waffles :) Those waffles were amazing and I never eat them at home so it really made me feel like I was indulging without going overboard. It also included a lot of alcohol which is something I don't do very often at home, drinking my calories is not something I like to do, I love food too much. I just made sure to drink a LOT of water and I also took my Fiber Drink from Advocare, staying regular is so important! I also tried to only eat when I was hungry and not just to snack while laying on the beach.

I have a fear that if I don't workout for a week I will lose all my muscles. That is completely nuts and a week off is actually GOOD for your body, it lets it heal. I ran 3 times while I was there just for my sanity :) No squats, pushups, or burpees!

Once I was home I had to get back in the game. The longer you stay in 'vacation' mode the worse it will be. You don't want those 5 pounds you gained to turn into 10. Here are some tips that I use to get back at it:

1. Become friends with your potty.

  • Drink a LOT of water. Here is a good calculator telling you how much your body needs! I already bought a case of water to keep next to my desk.
  • Get you some fiber. I love my fiber drink, the citrus is 'stronger' than the peaches and cream, but is harder to swallow. I don't have a problem with it though. If you don't have a fiber drink you should try the hot water with lemon in the morning! You will feel less bloated if you do this.

2. Hit the gym. Hard.

This for some is the hardest part, you really lose motivation after a week of wacky sleep and lots of activities. Sometimes you come home more exhausted then when you left, I blame that on the kids :) I made sure to lay out clothes and loaded some new songs on my ipod the night before. Spark helps too.
  • Get to bed early, once you're feeling rested the rest will be easier.
  • Make a plan. Invite someone to go for a long run when you get back. Tell your husband, hey I'm hitting the gym tomorrow so if you could start and finish the laundry that would be awesome :)
  • Think about how awful your week will be if you continue to slack like you're on vacation, but you're at work. No thanks.

3. Get to the Store.

I can tell you that the absolute LAST place I wanted to go on Sunday was Wal-Mart. From the screaming kids, crowds of people, and the old guy who wanted my help in the CONDOM section, I pretty much hate that place. It's cheap and close so I did what I had to do. While I enjoy eating out I do crave my healthy home cooked food after a few days, so I'm usually ready to stock up on my favs.

Last summer on the drive home I read 'This is Why you're Fat' by Jackie Warner and it really motivated me to eat cleaner. So if you need a good beach read find a book that will teach you something; eating, lifting, running, etc :) To be honest I read the book while munching on those pretzel M&M's {they are so freaking good!}, but it was the first and last time I ever ate them.

4. Weigh Yourself. Or Not.

I for one don't weigh myself anymore, I could tell by the way I felt that I probably gained about 5 pounds while I was gone. I don't need to see the number to know I need to get back on track, but you might. If you are just so unmotivated to get on the wagon again then jump on the scale and let that number piss you off. I've never meet anyone who went on vacation and lost weight so if you are motivated without it then skip this part. Even if you make healthy choices food at restaurants contains so much sodium you are probably retaining a lot of water.

Most of all enjoy your time while you're gone, but don't let bad habit get the best of you!

  2. Really excellent post. Leaving for vacation on Wednesday and I need to remember having fun is ok, but don't lose track of the bigger goal I have been working towards all year.

    Thanks!

  4. Those are all great tips for getting back to work after a vacation. I hadn't thought of the tip about taking a health or weight loss book for reading on the trip there or on the beach. I think I will try that next time. Some of my former students are reading The China Study and are really impressed, so I'm wanting to check it out.

  7. Great tips! I seem to have been in "vacation mode" ever since my kids got out of school. So hard for me to stay on track when there isn't the school-drop-off reason to wake up early. I must though!

  11. I have this irrational fear too about not working out a few days in a row and all my muscle (well, what's there) will be gone. Or I'll suddenly gain back like 50lbs in one weekend. IT'S IDIOTIC. But I get all antsy about it. I will say, though---the first year I was on weight watchers, I made myself stay on track with tracking (redundant much?) and I lost on vacation! I even splurged a little. But now? Having lost all my weight, that would never, ever happen in a million years. I love that family pic of you guys!! so cute, and so much love!

  17. I love that you didn't guilt or shame yourself for letting loose for a few days. Sometimes I forget to just let go and have fun with it, since moderation is very hard for me. I am most def a junk food snacker! Thanks for the real world motivation!

  18. Great tips!

But just wanted to say I have lost weight on vacation. I know it's not the norm but it can happen. I was at a cottage and made sure to walk the beach each morning (I had a pedometer and made sure to get in at least 10,000 steps a day), drank lots of water all day, but otherwise ate typical cottage foods (including chips, s'mores etc.) Came home and found I lost 2 pounds :)

  19. That's what I have to do every Sunday morning. It seems like the hectic Saturday schedules always interrupt workouts/ good eating. I figure if I get back on track fast, then those extra calories won't have a chance to become fat. And I will feel better about myself too! PS-- your daughter's swimmy suit is ADORABLE!!

  21. I love your advice! I just came back from a mini 3 day vacation in Vegas and although I worked out in my room out there (2 out of the 3 days), I am going to hit it HARD later today! Also, getting back to eating at home is much more appealing now! Thanks!
