Big D {my new PR!}

Sunday was an absolutely gorgeous day to run a half, low 60's, sunshine, just a little breeze. Brandi met me at my house and we left for the race around 6:45, I ate a Think Thin bar and had my Spark on the way. We arrived just as the full marathoners were taking off. For some reason we got some pretty special numbers....

We have no idea how we got yellow bibs numbered 1 and 2. People around us kept telling us 'the full is starting' haha. Yeah, that's cool, we are only here to rock the half. The line for the potties was insanely long and after waiting in the line we only had less than 10 minutes for the start gun. This was my first time running Big D and they didn't have corrals, but it actually wasn't too crowded so it was fine. We meet up with some of our readers which really was awesome! Everyone was so friendly and excited, it really was a great way to start the race!

My socks are CEB Compressions socks and my first time trying them out. I'm a believer, my shins/ankles didn't hurt at all and my calves are not sore today!

My last two halves were both 2:03 so I was really hoping to PR this one, I decided I wasn't going to mess with my phone at all, no pics and no keeking on the course :) There were at LOT of unnecessary hills, us Texas girls like our runs nice and flat, unlike our hair.  I don't wear a watch and because I didn't check my phone I really had no clue how fast I was going or what mile I was on half the time. Sometime before mile 3 I passed the 2:00 pacers, so my goal was to stay in front of them the entire time. I never looked behind me, but I kept feeling like they were RIGHT behind me.  I stopped at every water station and walked enough to swallow the entire cup in 2 gulps, I knew I wasn't as hydrated going into as I should of been. The days leading up to the race my stomach was killing me and the Fettuccine Alfredo did me no favors the night before the race, if you know what I mean.

I was feeling pretty good until mile 7ish when I took my Gu, my stomach started cramping so bad and I literally thought I was going to have to stop at a bathroom, which I've never had to do in a race. I just kept telling myself, it will pass it will pass just keep running. I wasn't happy with the race course, the last 3 miles {Which are the hardest!} there was no excitement, no one holding signs, nothing fun to look at, I started to lose my momentum the last mile which is weird because every other race I've done the last mile I am sprinting it in. It felt like the race was never going to end, but finally we turned into Fair Park and I saw the finish line. I crossed in 1:58.

I'm wearing a Flip Belt, which I love, around my waist to hold my phone and Gu.

I was so dang proud of myself because I really pushed myself out of my comfort zone, I ran a 9 min mile for 13 miles. After grabbing some waters and my bag I headed out to the finish line to wait for my girls, I was texting them, but getting no response, so I had no idea what mile they were on. Of course I looked down for a second and when I looked up Brandi and Jen were racing past me, I didn't even have my camera ready!

We all hung out for a little afterwards eating Popsicles and waiting for NerkyMeg to finish.  It was awesome that all of us set a new personal record, especially considering most of us didn't properly train. In fact Jen {in the green tank} didn't train AT ALL, she solely decided to run just to have some fun with us. That's my kind of girl :)

Obviously we had to refuel with some fajitas, margaritas, and chocolate cake afterwards.

Those tiny little skinny ritas were crazy expensive!

Totes worth it, we had a blast hanging out on the patio and relaxing.

The cake was amazing, for real.

We came home and Brandi just kept going on and on about how amazing my hair looked.

Uh, I totes KNEW there were tree bits in my hair and YES my visor should be matted up in it. Duh.

Overall I wasn't impressed with Big D, probably because the Rock and Roll is so much fun it kinda ruins the less exciting runs, but I will say it's going to be my most memorable race because of how hard I pushed myself and because of all the great company and new friends I made. I've only been doing one long run a month, so I'm glad to know that all my cross training at the gym is paying off. It doesn't hurt to switch it up if you are getting burned out on what you are doing, keeping up your fitness how ever you can is what's important!

Happy Monday!

  2. Under two hours?! Holy shit balls of fire, Megan! That's amazing.

And on a side note, I don't know why you are surprised at your bar tab. You and Brandi only order the most expensive drinks on the menu, always. :)

  5. Way to go! So happy for you. And I bet you got media numbers. Some races do that in case they want to interview you or something.

  18. I've just recently stumbled upon your blog and find it super motivating! I've always wanted to be a runner, so last year I completed the C25K program and ran my first 5Ks, The Color Run and The Dirty Girl. After that, I was so over running! It's posts like this that inspire me to get back at it and train for something more. Perhaps you and Mama should do the Dirty Girl in TX and I could join your team...We could be Team Hope Chest since it benefits breast cancer research!
