A virgin and a sewing machine

If any of you know my Mom then you know that it's crazy that I don't know how to sew.  She's like Martha on steroids, seriously.   I know some women suffer from empty nest syndrome when their kids leave, but not my Mom.  She turns your old room into a craft room :) She's working on the third one, ha-ha!

So, I've been dying to learn and I was going to just bite the bullet and go buy a machine, but had no clue which one.  Lucky me, I mentioned it to my friend Andrea {who is a great sewer!} and she had just upgraded to a fancier machine and gave me her old one!! I swear I almost did a dance in the restaurant :)

So this is what I've been doing....

Thank the Lord for You Tube!  The girl from Freckled Nest has some very helpful videos.  I just happen to have about 6 naked pillows waiting for clothes in the guest room.....

I guess subconsciously I knew I would be doing this? Hmmmm, it's funny how the brain works :)  So I did alright for my first time....

The corners are a little tricky and closing it by hand.   If y'all have some tips, BRING THEM ON! Please! It was actually pretty fun!  Can you believe I am almost 30 and this is the first time I've used a sewing machine? I think I've been missing out!

This is only one of the 10 projects I have going on right now, you know school starts in 13 days, gotta get a move on!  I'm hustling on my bedroom, the color is perfect and the nightstands are looking fabulous.  I had to custom order a bedskirt in a 21 inch drop length, hopefully it comes soon, I am SO impatient :)  We finally got a new TV in there and Miss M is L.O.V.I.N.G  it....

All she wants to do is lay on the bed and watch it, spoiled!  {ps excuse the weird pink duvet, I had to take the real comforter to the cleaners, it had GLITTER all over it from wrapping paper}  {pps Uh, don't buy glittered wrapping paper, it's messssssy!}

OK so now I have to go trace 250 felt circles for my next project.  Oliver agreed to cut them all out, yeah we shall see how that goes :)

  3. It looks great for your first project! I've been asked to teach some of my girlfriends how to sew. I guess I've been doing it for so long that I expect that everyone knows how to do it. Tips for corners, hmmmm. Well, I like to cut my fabric about an inch less than my pillow form (like if the pillow is 18x18, I cut my fabric 17x17). Then I use a quarter inch seam, so the finished pillow case size is 16.5. It makes for a nice, full pillow. When you do the corners, make sure you cut off the excess fabric (like in a 45 degree cut, but don't cut the seam). It'll make the corners less "bunchy" (is that a word?) And I use a chopstick when I turn my pillow right side out to really get inside the corners to make them nice and pretty.

  5. I took a sewing class in the 9th grade, but the teacher kept telling us that if we weren't careful, we'd put a needle through our finger. I've always been scared of them since!! Your pillow looks great, though!

  6. Great job on the pillow!! I was so afraid of the sewing machine but seeing a finished product is so cool.
    YouTube is a lifesaver to figure out these projects.

    Can't wait to see what else you make.

  8. Hi! I am reading your blog due to my friend Emily E! I have recently (within the last year) learned to sew and I love it. Anyway, I like to make my pillow covers envelope style. I got my the original "template" from Tatertots and Jello (search burlap pillow) but you could easily google and figure out how to do it. You can literally make a pillow cover in 15 minutes and no hand sewing!
    Can't wait to read more about your sewing adventures!
